leather and wood candle holder

made entirely by hand from reclaimed wood and pure untreated leather, the Cannwyll Candle Holder is a beautiful and unique piece to light up any home, the leather around the candle holder can be embossed with a message or letters of your choice. the wood is sourced locally, turned and waxed to give it a rich finish, making it the perfect gift to mark a special occasion. the leather is british, untreated saddlery hide which begins life as a pale pinkish colour but ages in time to a rich caramel hue, full of character. made entirely by hand, natural leather, hand-turned from locally sourced wood, embossed with your choice of message or initials. two sizes to choose from.

I was looking for a product that I could use to demonstrate embossing during a workshop. we had experimented with laser embossing and etching, but I needed to find something that the participants could take away with them at the end of the day. a wood turner friend asked if I could cover one of his wooden blocks in leather, and the idea for a candle holder evolved from this, allowing students to create their own personal item, but also giving me the inspiration for a new item.

to create the holder I hand-cut a single piece of vegetable-tanned british leather. I then emboss each letter onto the piece and mark out the stitching lines. the leather is glued in place around the wood, I then stitch it tightly in place and add a single copper rivet to hold it securely. the leather is then waxed, finished and buffed.
