satchels in scarborough

We have just spent the weekend in Scarborough, running a two-day workshop making Messenger bags at the North Yorkshire Art School. The results of these A4 satchels were stunning (see photograph).

Messenger bags have been around since ancient times, when they were used by couriers to transport important messages and documents. In the 1950’s bicycle messengers adopted this bag as a way to carry their belongings whilst navigating the busy city streets; particularly liking their durable qualities.

Historically, homing pigeons were used as messenger birds and although if you looked up in the sky now, you would no longer see these as technology took over, you will in October see a V shape of geese. These geese are arriving from Siberia, Greenland, Spitsbergen and the High Artic tundra. Coming to spend the winter on damp, lush British grass and escaping the frozen wastes. It is thought a specific protein in their eye gives them the ability to detect the Earth’s magnetic field which helps them to navigate and fly along the same routes each year.
